Thyroid eye disease (TED)
Graves’ disease or hyperthyroidism is the most common reason people develop thyroid eye disease (TED). It is possible, however, for some people to develop TED without developing hyperthyroidism and it may also precede or follow an episode of hyperthyroidism. TED is made worse by smoking.
There are many different treatments available for TED, depending on individual symptoms, ranging from diuretics, immunosuppressive drugs, synthetic cortisone medication, specially prescribed glasses, surgery and, in some cases, radiotherapy.
The care of your treating endocrinologist together with a specialist ophthalmologist is highly recommended.
