Iodine deficiency disorder

Iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is caused when a person does not receive enough iodine in their diet. As a result, the thyroid gland increases in size (development of goitre) and hypothyroidism can occur. This raises important health concerns with pregnant and lactating women and the developing baby, as iodine deficiency is the commonest cause worldwide of preventable mental retardation.

Iodine supplementation for all pregnant and lactating women is recommended and iodised salt is recommended in the daily diet of the general population.
