Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is underactive and unable to produce enough thyroid hormone to keep the body functioning normally. Hypothyroidism may be caused by thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, a non-functioning thyroid gland, surgical removal of the thyroid gland or destruction of the gland by radioactive iodine therapy.
Symptoms include:
fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, intolerance to cold, depression, poor concentration and memory, irregular menstrual periods. An underactive thyroid gland in children will cause poor mental performance and stunted growth.
