Hyperparathyroidism
Hyperparathyroidism is caused when one or more of the parathyroid glands produce excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This hormone controls the absorption of calcium into the body and the uptake and release of calcium from bones. Complications include high levels of calcium in the blood (which may be life threatening), high blood pressure, kidney stones and osteoporosis.
In 90% of cases, hyperparathyroidism is caused by a single benign tumour on one of the parathyroid glands.
This condition can be cured by surgical removal of the affected gland, often by a keyhole procedure.
