Thyroid Testing
The Australian Thyroid Foundation supports the importance of thyroid testing for all women contemplating pregnancy through to post menopause.
Thyroid disease, caused by iodine deficiency or an auto-immune disease, can affect anyone.
The effects of thyroid disease can be hypothyroid symptoms, hyperthyroid symptoms, nodules or cancer developing in or on the thyroid gland.
The tests that confirm thyroid disease are:
Pathology testing
The blood tests that confirm thyroid disease are:
- TSH – Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
- T4 – Thyroxine Level: the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland
- T3 – Tertroxine Level: the absorption level of thyroid hormone
- Thyroid
Antibodies – If antibodies are present this may indicating the presence of an
autoimmune disease
Other tests
- Thyroid Ultrasound – an ultrasound of the thyroid gland will show the size, shape and
texture of the gland, If nodules are present and whether further investigation is necessary.
