Bree Amer launches Thyroid Awareness Week 2008

Bree Amer, Ambassador to The Australian Thyroid Foundation, was joined by Beverley Garside, ATF President, students and staff from St. Monica’s College, Epping Campus in Melbourne Victoria, to launch Thyroid Awareness Week 2008 on Thursday 29th May.

Luke O’Halloran a Year 12 student at St. Monica’s College initiated students and staff to get behind the launch of Thyroid Awareness Week 2008. Luke invited Bree and Beverley to speak to the school community of 1800 students. Bree spoke about her role as Ambassador and the story behind her diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Bree also talked about the ATF message for Thyroid Awareness Week “Get Smart. Protect Your Baby’s Brain.”. The impact of this message and how iodine supplementation is so important to women contemplating pregnancy, pregnant and breastfeeding. Bree talked about the importance of thyroid testing and the increase in thyroid disease throughout Australia.

The School Council sold ATF gold bows to students and staff. The sum of $1016.55 was raised on the day, which is an outstanding effort.

Money raised from these gold bows will go towards The ATF's Gold Bow Day fundraiser, to be held on 1st September 2008.

The ATF would like to thank students and staff from St. Monica’s College and we would like to express our appreciation of their support. St. Monica’s students are a very special group of young Australians, showing others of their awareness of such an important event and message.

Thank you St. Monica’s College!
