Food Standards of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ):

The Australian Thyroid Foundation (ATF) was the consumer advocacy organisation represented on the FSANZ Committee, which discussed the re-emergence of iodine deficiency and the consequences. As a result of this committee’s contribution, the FSANZ made a mandatory decision in October 2008, for all Bread makers to fortify Bread making of commercial Breads with iodised salt.

The National Health Ministers Research Committee (NHMRC), made a recommendation in January 2010, for all women contemplating pregnancy, pregnant or lactating to ingest a daily pregnancy supplement containing 150 mcgs of iodine.

Foods containing iodine: Bread, seafood, dairy milk and dairy products, eggs and foods containing iodised salt.

Australian Centre for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ACCIDD)

The ATF was represented as the patient support organisation on the Australian National Iodine Nutrient Study (NINS) – Steering Committee.

The NINS research proved iodine deficiency has re-emerged in Australia. The NINS was the initial study which identified iodine deficiency as an important Australian health issue, affecting all life stages of the Australian population.
